Small dogs need anal glands cleaned monthly
To clean the glands lift the dog's tail upwards and press on both sides of the dog's anus using your thumb and your index finger. It's best to do this while washing your pet, either cover the area with a wet wipe completely or have your hand very soapy so that it all washes away. The liquid can be very strong smelling. If the dog seems to be in a lot of pain, or if the substance is green, it could mean that there is an infection in the anal glands. If this happens contact a vet.
