Add oil to water to prevent pasta from clumping
When cooking pasta, add a teaspoon (or two) of oil to the water before adding the pasta. It will cook like normal but won't clump up.

Pasta that's cooked in oily water will become oily itself and, as a result, the sauce slides off, doesn't get absorbed, and you have flavorless pasta.

Can't say I agree with Richard... a teaspoon of oil isn't too much, and won't make your pasta oily. A little bit of oil will also make spaghetti much easier to serve, since it won't stick together after the water has been drained. A little bit of salt in the water also works well.

all you need to do is have a lot of water and stir the pasta a few times after it gets dumped into the boiling water-- to make sure it doesn't stick together.

Oil has no effect on "sticky" pasta. Common sense will tell you, oil in the water will stay on top, will and can not cling to pasta to make it 'not' stick. Besides if it would stick, it would not do this very long as the boiling water will loosen it from the pasta to float toward the top. Lot's of water and rapid boiling with stirring often will do all. Add oil after draining.

FYI, the oil in the water also helps prevents the foam on top from over-boiling and spilling from the pan.

Just add a very little to the boiling water. Great for keeping down the foam but it's the stirring that really keeps the pasta from clumping together. As for rinsing the spaghetti off--dont. This helps the sauce stick to the pasta better.

Yeah I agree with Josh. The oil keeps the starches from binding together and foaming up. Thats the only reason the oil would be needed. Using a large pot with lots of water and stir a few times in the first few min and itll be fine

Yeah. This is so true. We've been doing this for ages. And it really helps not to make the pasta stick together. Great help. Don't put a lot of oil. Just a little amount will do.
