How to negotiate a pay raise
Anchoring is a key concept in psychology. The idea is that you want to anchor your boss to a high (but reasonable) number and have them negotiate down from there. For example, if you make $10/hr and ask for a raise to $11, you may end up at a negotiated rate of $10.50. However, if you ask for a raise to $20 (with some justification), your boss might think you're crazy, but you could end up with a negotiated rate of $15.
