Remove portabello mushroom stem before buying
When you purchase fresh portabellos at the store rip out the stem before you check out. You don't need the stem and it just adds to the cost by making them heavier.

Is this legal? I mean, can we cut or remove parts of produce that is part of the weight when we buy it? I'm not trying to be flip, but it just seems that this would not be considered ethical consumer practice. The store would really take an overall loss from this.

I agree. This is like skinning a banana or peeling an orange to keep from paying as much.

I agree...if they ended up with a bunch of stems, no one's going to buy them. I've actually seen most stores now packaging the mushrooms under saran wrap and are already pre-weighed for purchase.

skinning a banana and peeling an orange is completely different. no one will ever eat the peel.

I concur with everyone. I can understand pulling off a few wilted, outer leaves from my greens before I buy them, but yanking the stem off mushrooms is essentially discarding most of the weight. I've THOUGHT about doing it, but I never have...I'm afraid I'd get kicked out of the supermarket!

We may as well go ahead and core the apples and "gut" the green peppers, too. How ridiculous!

Leaving your wasted produce for the grocery staff to clean up is thoughtless. The stem of the mushroom is edible but nobody is going to buy a bag of your discarded stems.

I'm pretty sure there is no law against it. Of course, if everybody did it the prices would go up. I think it fits into the same category as buying grapes one at a time so the scales register 0lbs and the grapes are free.

I'm just gonna start bringing my pearing knife to the store. Heck, just cut off that huge broccoli stem too. Oh, don't forget to bring the tater peeler too.

Actually, my boyfriend has worked in a culinary school, and has told me that the stem of most mushrooms is the most flavorful part; slice it up and throw it in with the caps! Don't leave it at the grocery store!
