Let the dog smell your hand before you pet it
Whenever you see a dog, before you attempt to pet it make sure you let him/her smell your hand first. This will prevent the dog from being aggressive with you.

If you are facing an aggressive dog and put your hand out, the dog is very likely going to bite it. This is a dangerous thing to do.

If the tail has zero movement and is stiff, this is also a key sign that the animal is in its defense mode.

Yes and don't look the dog in the eyes, and if you feel yourself becoming nervous, stop and take a few deep breaths-dogs can sense fear.

I learned this at dog obedience school. Putting your hand out with fingers clearly seen, looks like juicy little hot dogs to an aggressive dog. THe correct method is to put your hand in a fist, and put it forward so the dog can smell you, but not nip at fingers. Especially a must for small children to keep those precious tiny digits safe during introductions to an unfamilar dog.

If a dog doesn't like the way you smell, it is still going to be aggressive.

You should never pet a dog that is unknown to you. You are putting your safety at risk.

I would assume people would know not to approach an agressive looking dog. But using common sense, this is a good tip.

Obviously you do not want to try to pet a dog that you think is aggressive. Putting your hand out will not PREVENT the dog from being aggressive. If you ask someone permission to pet their dog you put your hand out in a fist and let them sniff before you pet. That will help a shy dog trust you a little more.

Close your hand into a loose fist when letting the dog smell of it. I also carry a ziplock bag of dog treats in the car and will offer the dog a treat if he appears threatening. That usually makes a dog friendly. Just keep those fingers tucked in!
