How to stay at home and make money from cooking
I am a firm believer in cooking good healthy meals at home. This has led me to a business. I now cook meals for friends. I am also aware of labels and what things are in the products I buy so not only are my friends getting a home cooked meal that is healthy, but I am getting paid for what I would do at home anyway.

Quick reference access
Researchers! Keep program disks and reference materials close in case of crashes while you’re working. Keep physical references close: sort books & magazines by topic on nearby shelves. Organize a subset of most-used references, like dictionary, phone book, & style guide. Get materials on CDs instead of loading books onto limited shelf space, like encyclopedia, scientific data, writing guides, & mapping info. Organize Internet favorites into subjects so you can research/communicate on the fly.

A good way to finance your home based business
A good way to finance your new home based business is with a line of credit. How? Simply establish your new business as a legal entity. Register your business as an LLC. You'll receive credit card applications from banks who want to lend to your new business. You can then apply for a credit card in your business name. The best part is you establish yourself as a professional, and this credit does NOT show up on your personal credit report!

Create workflow boilerplates
Create templates of query letters and other stock information you use frequently. Do you have standard text pieces you use on frequently, like your title area, bio, and closing phrases? Open a template with these areas filled in. Are you an expert on one or two topics? Keep essential definitions and footnote material easily accessible to avoid retyping basic definitions or statistics. Do you have common e-mail text? Build it into your e-mail template.

How to create a mobile workspace
Have you ever gone to a temp/contract job where no one was ready for you? Carry a few business basics and wow even the toughest client with your ability to get right to work. Basics include pens, Post-its, writing pad, highlighter, a few paperclips, micro stapler with extra staples, small tape dispenser, etc. Add a few personal essentials so you’re comfortable. Include an extra timecard as well, a stamp so you can mail one, & a thank you card to successfully close the assignment.

Create a writer workspace
Claim regular space for your writing needs. Create a comfortable niche with minimal distractions and all your essential tools at your fingertips. Minimum needs include a well-lit desk unit, drawers, basic office and mailing materials, reference/research materials, and shelving. Use an in/out basket system, a tray or drawer for tools, and a simple filing system. If possible, keep a phone close so you don’t have to leave your desk to use it.

How to negotiate a pay raise
Anchoring is a key concept in psychology. The idea is that you want to anchor your boss to a high (but reasonable) number and have them negotiate down from there. For example, if you make $10/hr and ask for a raise to $11, you may end up at a negotiated rate of $10.50. However, if you ask for a raise to $20 (with some justification), your boss might think you're crazy, but you could end up with a negotiated rate of $15.
